Street Art Legends - KAWS

Légendes du Street Art - KAWS
Each week, HIYA Gallery looks back on the history of art and more precisely on the history of street art and its associated movements. We try to highlight the pioneers of this movement who have become legends, the mythical works that have left their mark in the history of street art, as well as important cultural events concerning the development of street art and graffiti, such as books rare or cult, exhibitions making reference in the history of the movement, films and other events.
We believe that in order to understand and feel the art of our time, we must constantly learn where it came from and what its roots are. That is why, alongside the representation and promotion of artists, we want to share with you knowledge about the history of street art.

KAWS

Brian Donnelly, better known as KAWS, is a contemporary American artist and designer.

Over the past few years, KAWS has conquered the art world, holding large solo exhibitions and creating large-scale outdoor sculptures around the world, launching new series of toys that sell out instantly and achieve every times new auction records.

KAWS began his artistic career as a graffiti artist, tagging buildings in New Jersey and Manhattan under the nickname "KAWS". He chose the name KAWS because he liked how the letters looked together.

It was in 1999 that KAWS started to create its first “Companion” toys which are now known around the world.

Nowadays, KAWS continues to develop new art projects and leaves no one indifferent - either we love it or we hate it. However, he is often compared to such influential artists as Keith Haring or Jean-Michel Basquiat, who also started their careers on the streets and developed a unique and recognizable style which was later adopted and celebrated by the art world. .
